It is our goal here at Design by Numbers to allow everyone to create their own masterpiece regardless of their skill level. Paint by numbers is a fantastic way to destress, focus intently in the moment, and exercise your creative muscles.
What's in Your Kit?
Every Paint by Numbers kit includes:
- Pre-printed numbered canvas
- Set of acrylic paints with matching numbers and guide
- Brushes (3 different sizes)
- Reference sheet showing the final image
- Premium wood frame included! What is a canvas with no frame? Its kind of like a peanut butter and jelly with no bread.
- Tacks for stretching canvas and hooks for hanging the art
Understanding Your Canvas
- Your canvas comes printed with a detailed outline of the final image, divided into small sections. Each section has a number that corresponds to a specific paint color. Think of it as a road map - each number tells you exactly which color goes where.
The Painting Process
You will want to have a bowl of water to clean your brushes in and an art rag or paper towels to clean and dry your brushes between colors.
Match the colors to the numbers on the painting and go for it! There really isn't a wrong way to attack it and during the process you will find the way that works best for you.
Pro Tips for Best Results
If you stretch your canvas before painting, make sure not to apply pressure from your hand to the stretched canvas as it could dent or stretch the canvas. When painting a stretched canvas, the brush is the only thing that should touch the canvas.
Keep your reference sheet until you are done!!
- Did you paint over a reference number and you don't know what color to use? Take a look at the reference sheet.
- Are you putting the final touches on the painting, but cannot remember what color goes where? Take a look at the reference sheet.
We all make mistakes and trust us, we've made plenty, however; the reference sheet is there to help create the masterpiece of a lifetime. Please keep it until your work is complete, trust us, you won't regret it!
The Final Touch
Once finished, let your artwork dry for 24-48 hours or until it is not tacky. If you are stretching the canvas after painting (see our canvas stretching guide) don't wait too long. The longer you wait, the greater the potential for paint cracking, so don't wait weeks to stretch your canvas.
For extra protection, apply a clear acrylic sealer. Display your masterpiece proudly - you've just completed your first Paint by Numbers!
